Land Governance and Societal Development

Land governance encompasses a spectrum of activities and policies essential for the effective management of land and natural resources, designed to achieve various political and social objectives. Its scope extends beyond mere administration and regulation, encompassing the intricate balance between environmental sustainability, socioeconomic development, and the preservation of citizens' rights. Societal Development serves as a cornerstone for a nation's holistic resource management strategy, ensuring the sustainable utilization of natural assets while safeguarding the rights and interests of its populace. By fostering an environment of fairness and accountability, transparent land governance mechanisms contribute significantly to poverty reduction efforts in societies. In essence, good and transparent land governance stands as a pivotal element in a nation's developmental trajectory. Its impact resonates across various sectors, steering sustainable resource management, upholding citizen rights, and serving as a potent tool in the pursuit of poverty reduction and inclusive growth agendas.

About International Land Governance and Societal Development Conference

The land governance and societal development discourse at the global level are premised on the fact that global common problems (including tenure insecurity, COVID-19 concerns, land degradation, biodiversity loss, land grabbing, and gender imbalance in the exercise of land rights, etc.) require knowledge building and capacity development solutions wherever they may be –in the global south or global north. Although governments must play a primary role in creating an enabling environment for good land governance and societal development, other stakeholders have activities, roles, and responsibilities on the governance of land resources. In response to this, The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), in close cooperation with the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF), will be organizing an interactive international e-conference (incorporation with its partners) for the global public to foster dialogue on the state of land governance and societal development around the world.

Date:
8 - 10 December 2021 Venue: Zoom (Online)

About NUST & HSF Collaboration

For almost 50 years, the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) has been involved in international cooperation and supports around 90 projects in 75 countries worldwide. For over 40 years, the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) has developed a long history in teaching and learning, dating back to 1980 when it started classes in teacher training and secretarial courses. NUST have collaborated with the HSF Office Namibia in various educational projects in the last decade. In August 2021, HSF Office Shandong and NUST signed a Memorandum of Understanding as partners in capacity development in land management. As part of this collaboration, HSF and NUST promote productive sustainability debates and dialogue with various interest groups, and the development of solution-oriented strategies for improving societal challenges. From 2021, the HSF

and NUST established the International Land Governance and Societal Development Conference as a common ground for cross-national and cross-disciplinary knowledge building.
